Sanskrit (संस्कृतम्, romanized: saṃskṛtam) is an Indo-Aryan or Indic language of the ancient Indian subcontinent with a 3,500-year history. It is the primary liturgical language of Hinduism and the predominant language of most works of Hindu philosophy as well as some of the principal texts of Buddhism and Jainism. Sanskrit, in its variants and numerous dialects, was the lingua franca of ancient and medieval India. Sanskrit is traceable to the 2nd millennium BCE in a form known as Vedic Sanskrit with the Rigveda as the earliest-known composition.
But Sanskrit is now spoken by less than 1% of Indians and is mostly used by Hindu priests during religious ceremonies. It’s one of the official languages in only one Indian state, Uttarakhand in the north, which is dotted with historical Hindu temple towns. Sanskrit has significantly influenced the grammar, phonology and vocabulary of the Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam languages of South India. The body of Sanskrit literature encompasses a rich tradition of philosophical and religious texts, as well as poetry, music, drama, scientific, technical and other texts.
Sanskrit is one of the official languages of India and is popularly known as a classical language of the country. Considered to be the Mother of all Languages, it belongs to the Indic group of language family of Indo-European and its descendants, which are Indo-Iranian and Indo-Aryan.
